Family Fun Night for Laughs - the Bag Game, the Flour Game and a very creative way to eat spaghetti!

Our family fun nights are such a huge hit with the kids! They are great for encouraging bonding and for creating lasting memories. We’ve had quite a number of Family Fun Nights over the years and I never thought any I could create would ever top our Minute to Win It Family Fun Night, but I was wrong! This one was even more fun and got us all laughing. It also was about half the work to prepare!

Most of this fun night can be put together with things you already have around the house. There are a few extras that I bought that added to the goofiness factor, but the activities could be done without spending any money.

Decorations. I used a bright plastic tablecloth that I could easily wrap all the garbage in and throw out at the end of the night. I knew that the activities were messy and it was worth it to buy the tablecloth to avoid the clean-up!

For the centerpiece, I used a clown hat and a whoopee cushion. They both got a fair amount of use later in the evening and in the days to come!

I also set lip pops and goofy glasses at each place setting and set out a trick drink for everyone (I explain how to make those below).

For The Husband, I set out a really funny pair of glasses with wind-up moving eyebrows and moustache. We also gave The Husband stick-on sideburns! The funniest part was that his hair is so light so the black sideburns looked really out of place!

Food. I made trick drinks by filling clear plastic cups with red jello and inserting a bendy straw into each before the jello set. They look just like juice ready to drink and they fooled almost everyone! They tried awfully hard to suck up their juice.

I made coloured popcorn for a snack but it was a flop. I followed the recipe but it was a soggy ball of yuck!

For supper, I made spaghetti because I needed a messy meal to pull off the next activity…

Activities. I put all of these utensils in a bag:

I then wrote silly names on index cards like “the Forkinator”, “Whirlwind”, “Double Trouble” that pertained to each one. When I read the names, people chose the one they wanted and I reached into the bag and handed them the utensil they had to eat supper with! In other words, there were no forks at dinner. Everyone had to eat their spaghetti with their utensil.

The Flour Game. This game is perfect for playing with a group with wide age ranges. Toddlers could play and so could grandparents, so it would be great for family reunions or holiday parties.

All you need for this is flour, a bowl, a lifesaver or coin and knife.

Pack a bowl with flour. Stick a plate on top of the bowl and carefully tip it upside-down so that you create a mound of flour. Put a lifesaver (or coin) on the top. Everyone takes a turn cutting the flour until the lifesaver falls. The person that knocks the lifesaver off has to retrieve it with their mouth.

The Flour Game

The Bag Game. My neighbour Christie taught us this fun game. This time we played it with a bit of a variation though. For the bag game, all you need is a large brown paper bag (or you can use an empty cereal box) and a willingness to play.

Standing on one foot, you must retrieve the bag with your mouth. You then have to tear off the bit of the bag that your mouth touched so that slowly, the bag gets lower and lower to the ground. Since we have a variety of ages in our family, we gave the littlest ones three strikes per turn and the rest of us had three strikes that carried through from round to round. After a long and hilarious competition, Einstein came out victorious!

The Bag Game

Extras. I had made some videos on JibJab starring members of our family and we sat down and watched the videos and laughed as comedic versions of ourselves danced, skied, sung, and rollerskated on the screen! I gave everyone funny glasses (with attached noses) to watch the videos with. After we tucked the younger kids into bed, we played a card game (Canasta) with The Ferrari and Fred and had some more laughs.

Dr. Seuss Theme Party

I like planning parties at the best of times, but I have to say that this one was especially fun to do! The only negative was that due to Pinterest, there were so many ideas I wanted to incorporate that it was hard to settle on what I could accomplish in the time I had!

Food. For all the food, the kids made little signs out of old file folders and white paper.

  • ‘Poodles with Noodles’ (pasta salad)
  • ‘Oobleck’ (green pudding for kids, guacamole for adults)
  • ‘Hop on Pop(corn)’, ‘Ring the Gak’ (Ringolos)
  • ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’ (gummies, goldfish crackers, and jello cups with Swedish fish made by my neighbour Christie)
  • ‘Cat’s Hat’ (marshmallow dipped in red melts on Oreo dipped in white melts made by my friend Michelle)
  • ‘Truffela Trees’ (marshmallows topped with edible glitter)
  • ‘Horton’s Peanuts’
  • ‘Cheese Trees’ (cheese cubes on toothpicks stuck in foam triangle)
  • ‘Green Eggs & Ham’ (devilled eggs with centers dyed green and ham)
  • Thing 1 & Thing 2 (cupcakes topped with blue cotton candy

Decorations. I used the box from a book set and filled it with bright tissue paper for the centerpiece on the craft table. I stood Dr. Seuss books up here and there throughout the main party rooms. I chose to use primary colours and keep the decorations simple instead of using actual Dr. Seuss decor. We made Cat in the Hat cups by putting red electrical tape that we bought at the dollar store around white cups.

Also because some of the food was so brightly coloured, it served as decoration too.

Activities. Miss Optimism drew this awesome Gak on poster board and we put a large water bottle behind it so that the kids could use rings to “ring the Gak” like it talks about in the book “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”.

We also had a Dr. Seuss puzzle for the kids to do.

Michelle organized a craft for the kids based on One Fish, Two Fish where they painted a background on one paper, set it aside for it to dry, drew a big fish with a pastel, painted over the fish, waited for that to dry, cut the fish out, and glue it on the background they made. They turned out so well!

I had planned on having the kids making Truffula tree pencils using pencils and bright feather boas I got at the dollar store but it didn’t happen.

The kids also played a Cat in the Hat game. The younger kids liked it. It seemed to have just about the right amount of silly!

Party Favors. My kids decorated green bags and I filled each one with these great lollipops I bought at Bulk Barn. They just screamed “Dr. Seuss” to me and because they were considered Valentine’s stock, they were at clearance prices. I also put in some Swedish Fish and a Dr. Seuss bookmark.

Other Dr. Seuss Fun. This party was a great way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday week! Earlier in the week, the kids also did a Dr. Seuss Writing Activity, ate their fun Dr. Seuss themed muffin tin meal, and played a Hop on Pop Sight Words game that they loved.

Backyard Olympics

(This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure policy.)

We are doing a mini unit on the Olympics to get ready for the Summer Olympics. Today, we had a family backyard Olympics.

Food. I made gluten free cupcakes iced in vanilla icing and topped with M+Ms to represent the Olympic rings.

I also served Bugles and Cheezies for the kids to make little torches with. They really liked this.

Crafts. We made two easy crafts.

I didn’t get a picture of the finished product of this one, but the kids each chose one colour to paint a ring made by cutting the centre out of a foam plate. When they were done, we had all five Olympic rings which we later used both as a decoration and as our discus!

This one turned out so well. To make this, just dip plastic cups into the paint colours and press down onto paper.

Backyard Olympics Events. The first event was a simple 100 meter (or so) race.

The deck stairs made a perfect podium for all our medal ceremonies!

The other events included discus, ring toss, wrestling, gymnastics floor routine (this was the favourite!), and hurdles.

Family Fun Night – Minute to Win It

(This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure policy.)

Tonight, we had a Family Fun Night with a Minute to Win It theme. It was extremely easy to come up with the games. On the official website, there are a lot of ideas with instructions on what you need and how to play. I had also bought the Minute to Win It Ultimate Party Bucket that we used for a few of the games and for the decorations. It had a lot of neat items and made it more fun! The theme made the evening so much fun! We laughed a lot.

Decorations. The pack I had came with a lot of balloons that said Minute to Win It on them and were in bright colours, so those and the box itself were our only real decorations.

Food. I had planned to make cupcakes and number them from 1-12 and have them in the shape of a clock, but I ran low on time (ironic?), so Fred and I made mini cinnamon rolls instead. I made a variety of finger foods: veggies, surprise spread, tortilla chips, salsa, spinach dip, focaccia, crackers, cheese, meat.

Activities. This was the really fun part of the night!  Here are some of the games we played. All we needed was a timer and things that most people have around the house. I did buy the ping pong balls, the Oreos, the Smarties, and the panty hose, but everything else we already had. For prizes, I bought mini skateboards, parachute men, and let the kids keep a ping pong ball each. All told, the party supplies cost about $5.

Face the Cookie. Each person had a cookie placed on their forehead and had to get it into their mouth without touching it with their hands. Einstein did it successfully!

Stacking 36 cups in a pyramid and then back down into a single stack. The Ferrari came the closest to conquering this one in one minute.

(I love the look on Granola Girl’s face here!) In this game, the kids had to start with the blue cup on top and stack the cups one by one until the blue cup is on top again.

Junk in the Trunk. This one was hilarious! With a kleenex box strapped around the waist, the participants had to try to get out the 8 ping pong balls just by movement.  It was really funny to watch!

Suck It Up. In this game, the kids had to transfer Smarties from one plate to another using only a straw. They were able to eat the Smarties afterwards.

Penny Hose. Players had to retrieve 2 pennies, one at the bottom of each leg of the panty hose.  Another funny one to watch.

In this game, players had to bounce ping pong balls into six cups.  Everyone was able to do it in the minute.

In this game, the kids had to blow a feather across the room into a bucket. Only The Ferrari was able to do it successfully.

This game was the hardest.  No one was able to do it in one minute. Stack an index card on the top of the cup until there are five cups and then yank the index cards out to attempt to create a single stack of five cups.

It was a great night!  It was a very easy theme to plan around and it was one of the rare themes that worked well with the broad age range of kids that is represented in our family.

Another family fun night with even easier ideas and one that also elicited laughter from everyone was our Just for Laughs Family Fun Night, which included games like the Flour Game and the Bag Game and a very creative way to eat spaghetti!!!

Army Theme Birthday Party

(This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure policy.)

Army Theme Party

A few week’s ago, we had a birthday party for Snuggle Puppy. I am still a bit confused as to why he wanted an army theme, as it is not something he is interested in in the least, but it was easy to plan.

Food. I planned the food around what Snuggle Puppy likes, so it wasn’t your typical kid food. He likes ethnic food, so I served samosas, pakoras, and bahajis. He is a fan of seafood, so I made crab rangoons. I also made a few other appetizers and veggies.

Instead of cake, I made cupcakes in camouflage wrappers and The Husband and I iced them with three different colours to make them look like camouflage. I added little plastic walkie talkies and other army related items to the tops of some and flags to others.

We had a small cupcake mishap, so there weren’t as many in the end as there had been when we iced them, but there were enough to go around!

Activities. Our daughter, Miss Optimism set up a face painting station and gave willing party guests camouflage faces. Fred and The Husband set up an obstacle course in the backyard and once guests were settled, The Husband put them through “basic training” on the course.

I don’t remember the course exactly, but one at a time, they had to run over, crawl through the tunnel, go up the balance beam, down the slide, over to the climbing wall where they went up that, down something to the other side, through another tunnel, crab walk quite far to the finish where they rode a little car down a ramp.  When everyone was finished the obstacle course (complete with The Husband barking orders at them like a drill sergeant would), they all did a running race. Once their training was complete, they were made honorary soldiers.

Now that they were soldiers, they were given their first mission: to rescue their fellow soldiers who were MIA. Fred had hidden dozens of plastic soldiers in our trees. The kids all enjoyed finding the army men. They were each able to keep any they found.

I also had put some toy army men in two clear plastic cups that I had taped together. The kids could then guess how many army men were in the cups. The one that came the closest got to keep all of them. I forgot to take pictures of these last two activities.

Extras. When party guests first arrived, they were given hats and dog tags that had a place to write their name and rank.  For party favours, each guest was sent home with a bag containing army related items such as plastic compass, binoculars, activity map, soldiers, parachute men, and a few candies in camouflage bags.
